Nubble Light

Description

Well, here it is: the one photograph I promised myself I'd never make. I shudder at the mere title of this shot...

This is Cape Neddick Light at Sohier Park in York Maine, known almost universally to locals as "The Nubble." It is also one of the most photographed lighthouses in America, so I'm told. Almost any view one has of this place suggests a photograph. Unfortunately, almost everyone shoots this place the same exact way, so most shots of this lighthouse look virtually the same. It is so over-photographed, I promised myself once that unless I could produce a vision of this place I haven't seen before, I would never shoot this lighthouse with the intent to show anyone. So you can imagine my surprise when tonight, that very scenario unfolded before me, completely unexpectedly. So please enjoy, as I did.

Tone-mapped HDR

This photo won first premium in the Color Seascapes category at the 2007 Deerfield Fair photo exhibition.

lol - I just did one like this. (I know what you mean about doing one about the Nubble.) I just did one of Mabry Mill (the most photographed place on the Blue Ridge Parkway), and I called the shot.... "Mabry Mill." I remember going to the Deerfield Fair as a boy. The award was well-deserved. The capture was excellent. I'm not particularly fond of HDR as a general rule, but I really like the effect it had on the water. I'm not crazy about the shimmer on the highlights, but it does put a unique spin on a very familiar (and oft-photographed) subject).
